As 2024 comes to a close, it’s time for a different kind of reflection—one that doesn’t just gloss over the wins but dives into the setbacks that shaped us.
Because, let’s face it, leadership isn’t just about success. It’s how we handle challenges that really defines us.
This year, setbacks taught me more than smooth sailing ever could (no surprise here!). Here are those 12 lessons with actionable insights—one for each month of 2025. Think of these as your guideposts to turn challenges into comebacks and frustrations into fuel for growth.
January: Setbacks can set the tone for the year
After a fabulous holiday in Cabo San Lucas, I was pumped up to start the year on a high note, but the Universe had another plan. One day before returning to work, I burnt my right arm, stalling me for almost a month.
This forced me to accept that setbacks would happen. However, how you respond to them sets the tone for the rest of the year. Are you ready to embrace challenges and let them refine your path?
February: Flip your Setback SOP (Standard Operating Process)
Despite accepting the mishap and focusing on healing, guilt got the better of me. I spiraled into a “Why me?” mindset.
That’s when I leaned on my Setback SOP to shift my focus to “What’s this teaching me?” This helped me make rational decisions. What’s your default response to setbacks, and how can you make it more productive?
March: Reflection helps you respond better
The forced hiatus helped me realize what I wasn’t doing—building new connections and friendships.
Choosing to pause and reflect stopped me from jumping to conclusions. Slowing down created clarity, and clarity led to better outcomes. When was the last time you paused to reflect before reacting?
April: Failure is the foundation for growth
As I built strong bonds during my downtime, I realized failures aren’t dead ends—they’re building blocks.
Ask yourself, “What foundation is this experience helping me lay?” How might this setback be the start of something transformative?
May: Growth happens in discomfort
By May, I was back in full force because I leaned on my shortcomings rather than avoiding them.
Discomfort is where growth happens. Instead of resisting it, ask, “What can this challenge stretch in me?” What pain have you been avoiding that might hold your next breakthrough?
June: A growth mindset unlocks new opportunities
Opportunities came pouring in as I stayed rooted in growth. Whether joining the NSA NC board, leading international leadership workshops, or leading masterminds of fellow speaking professionals, my professional life took new turns.
Your circumstances might be challenging, but your mindset can be tougher. How resilient is your mindset right now?
July: Course change doesn’t always mean bad
Taking a six-week travel break seemed foolish to others, but it enriched my soul and improved my health.
Small wins are essential. Are you giving yourself permission to correct the course and do something unconventional?
August: Support is a strength, not a weakness
A significant surgery taught me to lean on family and friends. My support system showed up for me—literally and metaphorically.
Leaders don’t need to go it alone. Are you asking for the support you need, or are you waiting for permission to seek help?
September: Pivot to keep moving forward
Returning with a new mindset and reflections, I realized I needed to pivot. So, I hired a team to help me achieve my goals.
When the path forward is blocked, flexibility can unlock new possibilities. How can you pivot to keep moving?
October: Your story is your power
No matter the roadblocks, I’ve always moved forward because I own my story.
Your setbacks are your story—owning them gives you power. What parts of your journey are you ready to share?
November: Tools make setbacks manageable
This year, I read 25 books, hired two coaches, and invested in learning programs to grow my business and life.
Books, frameworks, and coaches exist for a reason. What tools are you using to grow through your setbacks?
December: Rest is part of the process
Even before the holiday season, I’m already in rest mode. What about you?
Rest isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. Step back, breathe, and reflect before leaping into 2025. How will you recharge to show up stronger next year?
What Were Your Most Profound Lessons in 2024?
Which of these lessons will you carry into the new year?
